[Entrance music starts, then Todd Howard speaks with light music in the background]
Todd Howard: Hi there, Todd Howard Bethesda Softworks, welcome to our demo of the Elder Scrolls four Oblivion. Last year marked the 10th anniversary of the Elder Scrolls, which is pretty amazing, its a series that has grown over time culminating in 2002 with the release of Morrowind for the PC and Xbox. Millions of gamers have been waiting to get a look at the sequel, and we are excited to show it to you all publicly today at E3 2005. We find the key to keeping the series fresh for about ten years is re-invention, we literally start over each game, so they aren't necessarily sequels as opposed to original games for that generation. This takes a while but we feel it is essential so with Oblivion we started fresh, we wanted to create the RPG for the next generation not just the hardware but game players and gameplay. We looked back at what we had done with Arena, Daggerfall, Morrowind, what worked, what didn't work, how can games of the future entertain not just RPGs but any game for that manner, how can they present themselves and i hope you like seeing the answers we have here today. We've been working on this game for 3 years now, and we've honestly never been more excited about a project and we've been waiting for a long time to show this off, so lets jump right in and we'll tell you all about it.
[Music changes to a more dramatic theme]
Todd Howard: So we've thought of Oblivion through day one to be a next generation PC and Xbox 360 game if you've seen any of our previous stuff we love to push the hardware where it doesn't want to go and Oblivion is no different, we are really pushing the visuals in this game. Its essential for a fantasy game to come alive, its detail levels that people really haven't seen before. Here are the results. So this is where the game starts, in prison. All our games start in prison at the end of the line, we like the idea if you're a guy in prison. There's various types of texturing on every surface, diffused maps, paralax maps, normal maps, specular maps to create these results on every single object.
[Sound of a sword being drawn in the background]
Todd Howard: Our artists have painstakingly created over 900 objects for the game. This is all running in true HD 720P so i highly recommend all of you get a tricked out PC or Xbox 360 because this game is for this TV. We have real world physics on everything.
[A scraping of metal on stone is heard in the background]
Todd Howard: Soft dynamic shadows on everything. We are big fans of just cluttering up worlds to make them believable. So this kind of interactivity pushes that to the end of the rules. This is where the game starts, so we start in prison the whole first level takes place in this prison break and throughout that you determine what kind of character you will play, whether its a warrior, a mage, a thief, anything in between it really is a wide open game of player choice.
Woman: Baurus, lock that door behind us.
Baurus: Yes sir!
Uriel Septim: My sons, they're dead aren't they?
Woman: We don't know that sire, the messenger only said they were attacked.
Uriel Septim: No, they're dead! When are we...
Woman: My job right now is to get you to...
Uriel Septim: I know this place, the prison
Woman: Yes you majesty, beneith the legion compound, we're headed to a secret passage known only to the Blades, no one can follow us through here. Whats this prisoner doing here, this cell is supposed to be off limits.
Guard: Usual mix up with the watch. I...
Woman: Nevermind. Stand back prisoner, we won't hesitate to kill you if you get in our way.
Guard: Prisoner, stand away from the door, over by the window now! No sign of pursuit sir.
Woman: Good, lets go, we're not out of this yet.
Guard: Stay put prisoner.
Uriel Septim: You. I've seen you. Let me see your face. You are the one from my dreams. Then the stars were right, and this is the day. Gods give me strength.
Todd Howard: Anyone recognize the voice of Patrick Stewart there. He's playing the emperor of this game, its his part in the all-star cast thats really come together for this project. We will be announcing more of them after E3.
Uriel Septim: Assassins attacked my sons, and I am next. My Blades are leading me out of the city along a secret escape route. By chance the entrance to that escape route leads through your cell.
Todd Howard: The game features over 50 hours of recorded dialogue, all of this in real time. The voice data alone takes up over half of the game's DVD.
Uriel Septim: I am your emperor, Uriel Septim. By the grace of the Gods i served Tamriel as her ruler. You were a citizen of Tamriel, and you too will serve her in your own way. You will find your own path, take care, there will be blood and death before the end.
Woman: Please sire, we must keep moving. I will not close this one. There's nobody to open it from the other side.
[Strange sounds in the background like a rock moving out of place, sounds of splashing water]
Guard: Looks like this is your lucky day. Just stay out of our way.
Todd Howard: We're going to skip ahead now. One of the pieces of technology that we've all been wanting to do, but have never been able to in previous generations, is big, lush, realistic forests, you know they are part of so many fantasy themes that you think about, or you read about, or you see in movies and it was impossible before, but, you know, we like trying the crazy stuff.
[Birds and other foresty sounds play in the background]
Todd Howard: This was not possible 3 years ago. All this is being generated in real time, its also literally grown in real time by the game. This forest was not laid out by an artist. I personally spent some time at the University of Maryland Geology Lab study how soil erodes, how rocks form, how trees grow. We make the game create that force. This all animates in real time. Oblivion takes place in Cyrodil, which is the capital province of Tamriel. Its 16 square miles, half of that is covered in procedurally generated forest. Forests create some really cool gameplay spaces that you've honestly never experienced in a game before. Theres so many things you can do, you can hunt deer, kill a Bambie here, take its meat. If you eat that meat it will boost your stats. You can also pick berries, pick these mushrooms over here, eat the mushrooms, those have stats boosts. Like Morrowind you have alchemy skills, you can mix those things together to make your own cool potions. Take the mushrooms and pure meat. Its funny one of our first experiences when we created our first forest,

Todd Howard: It would be a bit difficult for us to script a behavior on everybody, so we built a radiant AI system. We give NPCs general goals of what they want to do, and they decide how to accomplish them on their own in unscripted ways. Again there are over 1000 NPCs all with 24/7 schedules. This is the western city of Chorrol. Cities are one of the main places where you will pick up your quests. The city has its own unique shops. Shops are good for buying and selling good, watching where the merchant's from, breaking in at night, stealing everything.
Woman: Good Morning
Todd Howard: We're going to have a dynamic conversation with the NPCs will talk to eachother and engage in non-scripted conversations based on whats happening in the world around them, things you have done, quests you should do.
Marus: Nelos, hello!
Nelos: Good to see you Maurice, what news have you heard?
Marus: The news is bad. Rumor has it there has been an attack on Kvatch. They say the Daedra attack in great numbers.
Nelos: Grave news indeed. Perhaps my axe can be of use.
Marus: I would imagine so. Goodbye Nelos and good luck.
Todd Howard: See, i've learned a new topic just by overhearing their conversation.
Man: Hello, what can a humble bard do for you in these troubling times.
Todd Howard: Okay, what are you guys talking about.
Man: I wish a new more about it. Strange gates have appeared and Daedra swarm the legion soldiers. They say the streets run red with blood, and the Daedra will soon overtake the entire city. If you're good with a blade, they could use you there.
Todd Howard: So now you have a quest.
Man: Guards protect you.
Todd Howard: These is a really natural activity,you walk around town, go into a tavern, whatever, listen to people talk, pick up information, ask them about it and get quests. I'm going to head into this bookstore and take a look at some other stuff radiant AI allows the characters to do.
[Sound of door opening and closing]
Woman: Oh hello, i was actually just about to lock up the store. Is there something i can help you with?
Todd Howard: See the topics i don't know information about appear in bold.
Woman: If you're looking for books, you're in the right place.
Todd Howard: Notice that topic is grey now, meaning that if i ask it again she's going to tell me something i've already heard before in the game, its a really quick way to kind of look at the things you need to know about. Often the information you get is based on how the people feel about you. This is the persuation system which allows you to admire, joke, you try to influence these characters. I'll use my speechcraft skill here to try a bit, look at her face, looks like she'll like a joke.
Woman: Thats a good one. An ork in a party dress, i love it!
Todd Howard: So now she likes me more, which means she'll give me better information when i ask about things.
Woman: Everything i've heard is horrible. Creatures coming from magical gates, whole cities being destroyed, its aweful! The whole thing is terrifying actually, would you mind staying around for a while, just to keep me company.
Todd Howard: So, people are also influnced by the words you choose in dialogue.
Woman: Theres no reason to be rude! You can leave now if you want!
[Pause]
Woman: Oh silly me, I should have known you were only teasing. Please, come on upstairs with me.
[Laughter from the crowd]
Todd Howard: No we're not going to do that. The game does track all 1000 NPCs all the time, how they feel about you, making friends leads to getting quests, better information, but we find a lot of players just apparently like to kill everybody too.
Woman: Whos a good dog, you're a good dog. Thats my puppy. Now be good, mommy has to practice.
Todd Howard: The radiant AI also controls Thunder here. Now she's decided she wants to practice some of her skills. Shes picked up a bow and arrow.
[Barking from the dog]
Todd Howard: See the NPC, the same skill system governs all of them, systematically, so they are good or bad at things.
[Sounds of arrows hitting a target]
Todd Howard: Mmm she sucks.
Woman: Terrible, just terrible. I need a little pick me up.
Todd Howard: See, theres a potion over here, that shes realized is there and she goes right on around. This will increase her marksman skill in the same way it would increase my own. Thunder is excited...
[Sound of arrows hitting a target]
Todd Howard: Now shes automatically better at that.
[Dog still barking]
Woman: Thats better. Are you hungry? Is that why you're so grumpy?
Todd Howard: Characters can pick up objects, she's just picked up some meat right over there. They can give those objects, or just leave them around. They can have their own pets that follow them around. Just like i had killed that deer, taken the meat and eaten it, Thunder gets the same stats boost as energy increases, he will run around and bark more.
Woman: I think I will get some reading done.
Todd Howard: The NPCs can read books. The game has over 400 books. You can read those, and they will increase your stats aswell.
[Dogs keeps barking louder]
Woman: I said mommy is reading
[Sound of a spell]
Todd Howard: She paralyzed thunder. They can cast spells aswell. Shes decided to eat, they'll decide how to get the food on their own they can buy it, they can steal it, in fact they go to sleep at certain times of the day. Good time to break in and loot the place. If you happen to be a vampire in the game, its a good time to do that.
Woman: That is a bad puppy!
[Sound of a spell and a squeeking dog as she sets it on fire]
Woman: Perhaps you better go, i'm not feeling like myself at the moment.
Todd Howard: Going to go back to that quest we have. You're going to see whats going to happen. This is the fast travel map, any place you know about in the world you can instantly fast travel so even though this world is huge, you can simply click the map and go right there. This gets you to the fun immedietly. In the games main quest, the emperor has been killed and the gates have been opened. Its your quest, and yours alone to rescue his only son or the whole world will fall.
